About the test
Direct bilirubin is a fraction of the pigment associated with its processing in the liver and excretion in bile. It is measured together with total bilirubin to clarify the pattern of an increase and possible involvement of the liver or bile ducts. The ratio of the fractions provides more information than total bilirubin alone.
An increase in the direct fraction does not establish a specific cause of the disorder. The result is compared with liver enzymes, symptoms and, when necessary, imaging investigations. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Clarify the bilirubin fractions.
- Complement assessment of the liver and bile ducts.
