About the test
Ear swab microscopy assesses the collected material and helps detect cellular and microbial findings associated with a local process. The test may complement examination when discharge or inflammatory changes of the external ear are present. Findings depend on the swabbing site, type of discharge and laboratory stain used.
Microscopy is not the same as bacterial culture and generally does not fully identify a pathogen and its antibiotic susceptibility. Those tests are ordered separately when necessary. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
