About the test

Eosinophil cationic protein is released by activated eosinophils and can be used as an additional marker of eosinophilic inflammation. ECP measurement sometimes complements monitoring in selected allergic and eosinophilic conditions. It characterises cell activity, not the amount of specific antibodies to a particular allergen.

An increase does not prove an allergy or establish its cause; the measurement can also change in other conditions. Serum collection conditions considerably affect the measurement. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of eosinophil activity.
  • Monitor the measurement in conditions selected by the doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
