About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a scraping specimen. Epstein–Barr virus may cause infectious mononucleosis and remain in the body after a previous infection.

Detection of viral DNA does not always establish the cause of current symptoms or indicate recent infection. The doctor selects PCR or antibody tests according to the clinical question and immune status.

The scraping site should correspond to the purpose of the investigation. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
