About the test
This test measures IgG to the EBNA nuclear antigen of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV). IgG antibodies to the nuclear antigen usually appear later than antibodies to the capsid antigen and may persist for a long time after infection. The test may complement investigation of suspected infectious mononucleosis or other clinically justified situations.
Interpretation considers the combination of VCA IgM, VCA IgG and EBNA IgG, the timing of symptoms and other information. A single elevated marker does not prove viral reactivation or automatically explain prolonged fatigue.
Why it is ordered
- Complement EBV serological testing.
- Clarify the nature of the immune response in combination with other antigens.
