About the test

The ethanol test in the haemostasis section is a reaction associated with detecting soluble products of fibrin formation in plasma. The classical ethanol test assesses gel formation after a reagent is added. It is a historically used additional marker of coagulation activation; its diagnostic role depends on the particular method and the laboratory’s algorithm.

This item does not mean measurement of alcohol in blood. The result does not independently confirm disseminated intravascular coagulation or thrombosis and must be considered together with a modern coagulation panel. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of coagulation activation when ordered.
  • Compare the result with other haemostasis measurements.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
