About the test
This test combines assessment of blood cells and the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, helping the doctor obtain an overall picture of blood formation and possible inflammation. Blood cell measurements can reveal signs of anaemia and changes in white blood cells or platelets; ESR provides additional, nonspecific information. The exact list of parameters depends on the laboratory programme used.
An elevated ESR does not identify a single cause of inflammation, and a normal complete blood count does not exclude every disease. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
