About the test

Ferritin is a protein that binds and stores iron in the body. The test measures its concentration in blood and helps the doctor assess iron stores.

Low ferritin may indicate depleted iron stores, including before anaemia develops. A high value does not always mean excess iron: it can also occur with inflammation and certain diseases.

The result is assessed together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. When necessary, the doctor considers the complete blood count, iron metabolism measurements and inflammatory markers. The reference values shown on the laboratory report are used for interpretation. A diagnosis is not established from a single measurement.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess iron stores.
  • Clarify possible iron deficiency when investigating anaemia.
  • Assess possible iron overload together with other investigations.
  • Monitor treatment as directed by a doctor.

How to prepare

Check preparation requirements with the laboratory before taking the test. Tell your doctor about medicines and supplements, including iron preparations. Do not stop prescribed treatment on your own.
