About the test
Fibrinogen is a plasma protein from which fibrin, the framework of a blood clot, is formed during coagulation. It is investigated when assessing bleeding and other haemostasis disorders. Fibrinogen is also an acute-phase protein: its concentration may increase during inflammation, so the result reflects more than coagulation system function.
A reduction may accompany impaired production or increased consumption of the protein. The cause of a change and its implications for treatment are determined together with other coagulation measurements. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess fibrinogen in haemostasis disorders.
- Monitor changes in the measurement in an established disease.
