Folates, or vitamin B9, are needed for blood cell formation and DNA synthesis. The test helps assess their concentration. It is used when investigating selected types of anaemia, nutritional disorders or impaired absorption.
The result is compared with the complete blood count and vitamin B12. Recent food intake and supplements can affect the measurement; the test does not replace investigation of the causes of anaemia. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
