About the test
Free T3 is the portion of the thyroid hormone triiodothyronine that is not bound to proteins. It helps clarify the pattern of thyroid dysfunction, particularly when thyrotoxicosis is suspected. T3 helps regulate metabolism.
The result is considered together with TSH and T4, symptoms and treatment. Free T3 testing has methodological limitations in some conditions. An isolated change is not a standalone diagnosis.
