About the test

GGT is an enzyme used when investigating the liver and bile ducts. Its activity may increase when bile flow is impaired and in certain types of liver injury. Together with alkaline phosphatase, it helps clarify the likely source of an alkaline phosphatase increase: the liver or bone tissue.

Alcohol and medicines can affect GGT; the result alone does not establish a diagnosis or identify the cause of injury. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of the liver and bile ducts.
  • Clarify the source of elevated alkaline phosphatase.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
