About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. Gardnerella vaginalis is associated with changes in the vaginal microbiota that may accompany bacterial vaginosis.

Detection of a single microorganism does not replace assessment of the full clinical picture. Gardnerella may be present without symptoms, so the result is not equivalent to an independent diagnosis of vaginosis.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Gardnerella vaginalis genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
