About the test

The test detects Giardia antigen in stool and helps investigate intestinal Giardia infection. Unlike a blood antibody test, it targets parasite components in intestinal material. It is ordered for appropriate symptoms or epidemiological circumstances; the precise antigen detection method depends on the laboratory.

One negative sample does not always exclude infection because parasite material may be shed intermittently. The doctor determines whether repeat testing is needed. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Giardia antigen in stool.
  • Complement investigation of intestinal symptoms when giardiasis is suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
