About the test

This test measures IgM antibodies to Giardia in the blood. This characterises the immune response and does not show whether the parasite is present in the intestine at the time of testing. Antibodies may persist after contact; their class does not reliably establish the stage of giardiasis.

Appropriate stool tests are used to confirm a current intestinal infection; serology does not replace them and is not a reliable test of cure. The need for this antibody test should be discussed with a doctor, taking its limitations and the clinical situation into account.

Why it is ordered

  • Obtain information on the antibody response to Giardia.
  • Discuss the need for direct stool testing when infection is suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
