About the test

The test assesses changes in glucose following a standardised load, helping detect abnormalities that may not be evident from a single measurement. It is used to clarify carbohydrate metabolism, including specific indications during pregnancy. The chosen protocol, exact sample collection times and the clinical situation for which the test was ordered are important.

Different protocols are not interchangeable. The number of samples, amount of the load and whether the test can be performed should be agreed in advance with the laboratory and the referring doctor. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Clarify impaired glucose tolerance.
  • Perform an assessment according to the protocol chosen by the doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
