About the test

HbA1c reflects the proportion of haemoglobin bound to glucose and helps assess average blood sugar over the preceding months. Unlike a single glucose measurement, it describes a longer period. It is used in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes mellitus when the selected method and clinical circumstances permit reliable interpretation.

Altered red blood cell survival, certain haemoglobin variants and blood transfusion can distort the result. Specimen material must be clarified: the test concerns red blood cells, not serum. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess longer-term glycaemia.
  • Monitor diabetes control.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
