About the test
A gynaecological smear helps assess cellular elements and the characteristics of microflora in the collected material. Microscopic findings may complement investigation of discharge, itching and other gynaecological symptoms. The term degree of purity is a laboratory description, not a literal assessment of hygiene.
A conventional smear does not detect every infection or replace PCR, culture or a cervical Pap test. Its significance depends on the sampling site and clinical information. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
