About the test
HDL cholesterol describes one fraction involved in cholesterol transport in blood and is used when assessing cardiovascular risk. High-density lipoproteins help transport cholesterol from tissues to the liver. The measurement is usually considered together with total cholesterol, LDL and triglycerides, taking blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and other factors into account.
High HDL does not guarantee protection against heart disease, and a single value does not replace an overall assessment of lipid metabolism and risk. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
