About the test

This test detects IgM antibodies to Helicobacter pylori, a bacterium that may be associated with gastritis and peptic ulcer disease. Antibodies reflect the immune response following contact with the bacterium and may persist after its eradication. Their presence does not prove that the infection is currently active.

Serology is unsuitable for confirming successful treatment and has limitations in initial diagnosis. To assess a current infection, the doctor usually selects a breath test, a stool antigen test or investigation with biopsy when indicated. A positive antibody result is not an independent basis for treatment.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the antibody response to H. pylori, taking its limitations into account.
  • Clarify the appropriate method for checking for a current infection with a doctor.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
