About the test

This test detects IgM antibodies to the hepatitis A virus. IgM is used when recent hepatitis A is suspected, taking symptoms and epidemiological information into account. This test is not intended to assess previous vaccination.

A positive IgM result is not interpreted in isolation: false-positive reactions and the timing of the illness may affect it. The doctor compares the result with liver test results and other information; an early negative test does not always exclude infection.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement testing when acute hepatitis A is suspected.
  • Clarify serological status alongside clinical information.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
