About the test

The test measures hepatitis B surface antigen, HBsAg, using a chemiluminescence assay. Detection of HBsAg may indicate current infection. To assess its nature, the doctor considers other hepatitis B markers, liver measurements and, when necessary, viral DNA.

A single result does not distinguish acute from chronic hepatitis or assess immunity after vaccination. An initially reactive result may require confirmation; recent infection and other circumstances are considered separately.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect or clarify the presence of HBsAg.
  • Complement investigation of hepatitis B virus.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
