About the test
This chemiluminescence assay detects antibodies to hepatitis C virus, anti-HCV, in blood. Antibodies indicate an immune response following exposure to the virus but may persist after recovery or successful treatment. HCV RNA testing is usually needed to establish current infection.
This test alone does not determine viral load, infectiousness or protective immunity. Antibodies may still be absent early in infection. A reactive result is assessed according to the accepted diagnostic algorithm.
