About the test
PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. Haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome is caused by certain hantaviruses. The molecular test targets their genetic material.
Diagnosis requires consideration of symptoms, likely exposure and timing of the illness; antibody tests may be needed. The test does not replace medical care for fever with deterioration in the patient’s condition.
The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.
Why it is ordered
- Detect genetic material from hantaviruses associated with HFRS in the specified specimen.
- Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.
How to prepare
Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
