About the test

HOMA-IR is an index calculated from glucose and insulin concentrations and used as an additional assessment of insulin sensitivity. Insulin helps cells use glucose. When sensitivity to insulin decreases, the body may need more insulin. The index is considered when investigating metabolic disorders, but does not replace assessment of glucose and clinical risk factors.

The calculation method and applicable cut-offs depend on the laboratory method and the population being tested. A single index does not confirm insulin resistance or diabetes. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of insulin resistance.
  • Compare insulin and glucose in metabolic disorders.
