About the test

Insulin is a pancreatic hormone that helps cells use glucose and is involved in regulating metabolism. It is investigated in selected disorders of carbohydrate metabolism and when clarifying the causes of hypoglycaemia.

The result is strongly dependent on food intake, glucose and treatment. Insulin alone does not establish a diagnosis of diabetes or insulin resistance. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess insulin secretion together with glucose.
  • Complement investigation of the causes of hypoglycaemia.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
