About the test
The test measures iron circulating in the blood and complements investigation of anaemia and disorders of iron metabolism. Iron is needed to produce haemoglobin and transport oxygen. Its concentration is compared with ferritin, transferrin and iron-binding capacity to distinguish inadequate intake, altered transport and other conditions.
Serum iron varies throughout the day and in different conditions, so a single measurement does not reflect iron stores throughout the body. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
