Lactate is a product of energy metabolism. Its concentration helps assess the balance between lactate production and clearance in the body. An increase can occur when tissues receive insufficient oxygen, in severe metabolic disorders and in a range of other conditions. The test is used as part of a clinical assessment, rather than as a standalone test for a particular disease.
The result is particularly sensitive to sample collection and processing conditions and to physical activity.
