About the test

LDH is an enzyme found in many body tissues. Changes in its activity help assess cell injury alongside other investigations. The measurement may change in disorders of the blood, liver, muscles and other organs. Total LDH testing does not identify individual isoenzymes and is used as an additional rather than a standalone diagnostic marker.

An increase is not specific to one organ. Breakdown of red blood cells in the sample can considerably increase LDH activity and require the result to be checked. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement assessment of tissue injury.
  • Monitor the measurement in an established disease.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
