About the test

Leptin is a hormone produced by adipose tissue that helps signal energy stores and regulate appetite. Leptin is measured for specific indications when investigating selected disorders of energy metabolism. Its level is associated with the amount of adipose tissue, but also depends on sex and metabolic characteristics.

The test is not a universal investigation of the cause of excess weight and does not determine a personal diet. Most obesity is not caused by a simple leptin deficiency. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess leptin concentration for specific indications.
  • Complement endocrine investigation of energy metabolism.
