About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a blood specimen. Leptospires are bacteria that cause leptospirosis. Their genetic material and antibodies to them are detected by different tests.

The choice of blood, urine or another specimen depends on the stage of illness. A negative PCR result does not exclude leptospirosis; if necessary, the doctor complements testing with serology.

The usefulness of a blood test depends on the clinical situation and the timing of specimen collection. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Leptospira genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
