About the test

Lipase is an enzyme involved in fat digestion. Measuring its activity in blood helps investigate the pancreas. The test is used primarily when acute pancreatitis is suspected, comparing the result with symptoms and other investigations. Lipase may remain elevated for some time after pancreatic injury begins.

An increase also occurs in other conditions, including impaired kidney excretion. The lipase level alone does not show the severity of a disease. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement diagnosis of pancreatic injury.
  • Clarify laboratory abnormalities when pancreatitis is suspected.
