About the test
Lipoprotein(a) is a particular lipoprotein particle whose level is largely determined by inheritance and complements cardiovascular risk assessment. An elevated concentration may indicate additional risk of atherosclerotic disease that is not fully reflected by a standard lipid profile. It is considered together with family history and other risk factors.
Lipoprotein(a) should not be confused with apolipoprotein A1. Results in different units cannot always be converted using a simple fixed factor. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess an additional inherited risk factor.
- Clarify risk in people with a family history of early cardiovascular disease.
