About the test
A liquid-based Pap test assesses cervical cells placed in a special liquid medium after collection. A slide is prepared from the liquid sample for cytological assessment of cellular changes. The test is used to screen for precancerous cervical conditions; sample processing differs from a conventional smear, while the aim of the test remains the same.
Instrument-based preparation does not eliminate the possibility of missed changes or the need for another sample. An HPV test is not automatically included, and abnormal cytology requires medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
