About the test

LH is a pituitary hormone involved in regulating ovulation and sex hormone production. In men, it influences testosterone production. The test is ordered for menstrual cycle disorders, infertility investigation and selected disorders of sexual development.

LH production varies during the cycle and occurs in pulses. The result is assessed in the context of age, sex, FSH and sex hormones. An isolated LH-to-FSH ratio is not sufficient for diagnosis.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess regulation of ovarian or testicular function.
  • Complement investigation of menstrual cycle and fertility disorders.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
