About the test
Magnesium is a mineral needed for muscle and nerve function and many enzyme reactions. The test measures its concentration in blood. It is used when magnesium deficiency or excess, electrolyte disorders or kidney disease are suspected. It may complement assessment of an unexplained change in calcium or potassium.
The blood magnesium concentration does not reflect all magnesium stored in tissues. The result depends on kidney excretion, fluid losses and medicines being taken. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
