About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. Mycoplasma genitalium is a bacterium that may cause inflammation of the urethra and cervix.

The test is ordered when clinically indicated, particularly for persistent or recurrent symptoms. It does not determine antibiotic susceptibility unless resistance testing is ordered separately.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Mycoplasma genitalium genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
