About the test
A rhinocytogram assesses the cellular composition of nasal mucosal material and may complement investigation of the causes of rhinitis. The proportions of inflammatory and epithelial cells help describe the local reaction. The test is considered together with examination, symptom duration and allergy assessment findings when indicated.
The presence of eosinophils does not identify a specific allergen, and absence of characteristic cells does not exclude all forms of rhinitis. Sampling quality affects the result. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
