About the test
PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in a scraping specimen. The gonococcus Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium that causes gonorrhoea.
A molecular test helps detect the organism in a specific specimen but does not determine antibiotic susceptibility. If necessary, the doctor orders a separate test for this purpose.
The scraping site should correspond to the purpose of the investigation. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.
