About the test

PCR searches for the organism’s genetic material in urine. The gonococcus Neisseria gonorrhoeae is the bacterium that causes gonorrhoea.

A molecular test helps detect the organism in a specific specimen but does not determine antibiotic susceptibility. If necessary, the doctor orders a separate test for this purpose.

A urine test concerns this specimen and does not exclude the presence of the organism at other sites in the body. The result is assessed alongside symptoms and the results of other ordered tests.

Why it is ordered

  • Detect Neisseria gonorrhoeae genetic material in the specified specimen.
  • Complement testing when the relevant infection is clinically suspected.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
