About the test

Neuron-specific enolase is an enzyme present in nerve cells and certain neuroendocrine cells. The test may complement monitoring of selected neuroendocrine tumours, including small-cell lung cancer, as directed by a relevant specialist.

An increase can occur in conditions other than malignant tumours, and a normal result does not exclude disease. The test is not intended as a standalone cancer screening test; it is assessed together with examination, imaging and other investigations. Breakdown of blood cells in the sample, or haemolysis, can distort the NSE level.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement investigation ordered by a relevant specialist.
  • Assess changes in the marker during follow-up and treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
