About the test

This test detects IgG antibodies to Opisthorchis, associated with opisthorchiasis. This examines the immune response, rather than searching for the parasite itself. Antibodies may persist after a previous infection; cross-reactions with other parasites are possible. Diagnosis considers the possibility of detecting parasite eggs and findings from examination of the biliary tract. Antibodies do not confirm that the parasites are viable.

The presence of antibodies does not automatically indicate active disease or the need for treatment. The significance of the result depends on symptoms, suspected contact, immune status and confirmatory information; a negative test early after infection does not always exclude infection.

Why it is ordered

  • Complement testing when opisthorchiasis is suspected.
  • Compare the antibody response with clinical and confirmatory information.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, ask the laboratory about preparation and specimen collection requirements. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
