About the test
This test detects IgM antibodies to Opisthorchis, associated with opisthorchiasis. This examines the immune response, rather than searching for the parasite itself. Antibodies may persist after a previous infection; cross-reactions with other parasites are possible. Serological IgM tests have limited diagnostic value in parasitic infections. This result does not independently confirm acute opisthorchiasis.
The presence of antibodies does not automatically indicate active disease or the need for treatment. The significance of the result depends on symptoms, suspected contact, immune status and confirmatory information; a negative test early after infection does not always exclude infection.
