About the test

pH describes the acidity of a blood sample and helps assess the body’s acid-base status. Changes in pH are considered in respiratory and metabolic disorders affecting acidity regulation. Meaningful interpretation often requires other blood gas and electrolyte measurements; these are not automatically assumed to be included in this separate item.

Venous and arterial blood have different diagnostic applications. Air exposure, delayed measurement and other sampling conditions considerably affect the result. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess blood acidity.
  • Complement investigation of acid-base disorders.
