About the test
Phosphorus in blood is usually measured as inorganic phosphates. It is involved in energy metabolism and maintenance of bone tissue. The test helps assess mineral metabolism, especially in kidney disease and disorders of calcium and phosphorus regulation. The value is compared with calcium, kidney function and, when necessary, hormonal measurements.
Age, diet and the time of sample collection can affect the concentration. An isolated abnormality does not indicate which part of mineral metabolism is affected. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.
Why it is ordered
- Assess phosphate metabolism.
- Complement assessment of mineral disorders and kidney function.
