About the test

Potassium is an electrolyte needed for nerve impulse transmission and muscle function, including the heart muscle. Its concentration is measured when investigating fluid and electrolyte disorders and kidney disease, and to monitor certain treatments. Potassium balance depends on its distribution between cells and blood, intake and excretion.

Breakdown of cells in the sample can falsely elevate the result. An abnormal value is assessed in the context of the person’s condition and, when necessary, confirmed using a correctly collected sample. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess potassium concentration.
  • Monitor electrolyte balance during disease or treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
