Procalcitonin is a protein marker that may increase in severe bacterial infection and a systemic inflammatory response. It is measured when serious infection is suspected and is used in clinical monitoring together with other information.
A low value does not exclude an early or local infection, and an increase can occur in non-infectious conditions. Antibiotic decisions are not based on this test alone. The result is interpreted in the context of age, clinical information, other measurements and the method used; the doctor decides on further action.
