About the test

Electrophoresis separates serum proteins into fractions and shows their distribution, which cannot be seen from total protein alone. The test helps assess changes in albumin and globulin groups in inflammatory, liver and certain haematological conditions. An unusual band or protein distribution may prompt more precise additional investigation.

Electrophoresis alone does not establish the nature of every detected change. If a monoclonal protein is suspected, the doctor may order confirmatory methods that are not automatically included in this item. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the distribution of protein fractions.
  • Clarify the causes of changes in total protein.
  • Determine the need for additional protein investigations.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
