About the test

PT, prothrombin index and INR describe the result of the prothrombin test, which investigates selected parts of blood coagulation. Prothrombin time reflects clot formation after a reagent is added; prothrombin index and INR are related ways of expressing the result. INR is particularly important when monitoring vitamin K antagonist treatment, for which the doctor sets an individual target.

Changes may relate to medicines, factor deficiencies and liver disease. An anticoagulant dose must not be changed independently based on the result. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess the prothrombin component of coagulation.
  • Monitor prescribed vitamin K antagonist treatment.
  • Complement investigation of the causes of bleeding.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
