About the test

Reticulocytes are young red blood cells. Their number helps assess how the bone marrow replenishes the supply of red blood cells. The test is used to clarify the type of anaemia, assess the response to treatment and recovery of blood formation. The result is particularly informative when compared with haemoglobin, the red blood cell count and other blood measurements.

An increased reticulocyte count may reflect compensatory bone marrow activity rather than a separate disease; its significance depends on the severity of anaemia and the clinical situation. The doctor assesses the result together with symptoms, medical history and other investigations. The reference values of the individual laboratory are used for comparison, and changes over time are considered during follow-up.

Why it is ordered

  • Assess red blood cell production.
  • Clarify the mechanism of anaemia.
  • Monitor the response of blood formation to treatment.

How to prepare

Before taking the test, check the preparation and specimen collection requirements with the laboratory. Tell your doctor about medicines and recent treatment. Do not stop prescribed medicines on your own.
